PP Primer / Adhesion Promoter
Evaluation of Suitable Polymeric Primers for Moulded Polypropylene Specimen
By
UNIVERSITY SCIENCE OF MALAYSIA
(School of Industrial Technology)

AIM:
The main task of this study was to search and evaluate several probable polymers as primers to improve paintability
of adhesion of paint coating on polypropylene moulded pieces. The polypropylene pieces were to simulate those of
polypropylene homopolymer used car bumpers.

PROCEDURE:
Several polymers viz Natural Rubber compound, Chlorosulphonated Polyethylene (CSPE) and Chlorinated Polyethylene
(CPE)
were selected for this purpose. A 2% solution was prepared and then thin layer was applied to the various specimen.
When dried, they were then painted with a thin coat of paint. A control which was that without the primer was similar
painted for comparison. Several standard tests to assess the paint adhesion properties were subsequently performed. They were as follows:-

(A) Peeling Test
Square pattern was cut on the paint, then taped which was subsequently peeled.

(B) Resistance Against 2H Pencil
Straight line was engraved on the surface. The resistance of the paint surface were then noted.

(C) Bending for Flexing Resistance
Here the specimen s were flexed several times, the peeling resistance were noted.

(D) Peeling Resistance after Soaking in water and UV exposure for 48 hrs

(E) Falling weight Impact Resistance

  No peeling observe,

  Slight peeling similar
  to CSPE, however
  CPE seems to be

  Slight peeling around
  the impact region.

  Poor bonding

  Good bonding

  Reasonable bonding

  Poor, loss of bonding

CONCLUSION
From the various tests, it is apparent that the Natural Rubber Based primer were the best with no obvious indications
of peeling off under the numerous conditions viz. soaking, UV exposure, against 2H pencil scratch and flexing.
